Ah, those size-zero ladies, with their sternums and clavicles and harshly sweeping cheekbones and big, big vulnerable eyes and sharply delineated wrists (set off to perfection by an oversized man’s watch and a clutch of chunky bracelets) — they were fun for a while, in a car-crashy kind of way, weren’t they? All that gossip and bitchery. But they weren’t very … sexy. You couldn’t imagine shoving Nicole Richie up against a wall and doing naughty things to her, could you? She would break. Nope, those skinny little wenches may be good at dangling Chanel handbags from delicate fingers, but they don’t do so well at inspiring lasciviousness, awe and plain ol’ dirty thoughts. For that, you need a lady with some flesh on her bones. And I know just where to find one.

While all eyes have been on Hollywood’s anorexic angels, the world of indie rock has been undergoing some ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. When women wanting to make it in the mainstream will swiftly be told to slim down, nobody is paying any attention to the margins, which means that if you sneak a peek at any one of the many all-girl bands out there on the indie circuit, I guarantee there will be at least one pudgy little sauce-pot (UK size 14 or larger) in the band. Are Jobless People Fat?

Last week, we highlighted a scary county-by-county map that a commenter posted to #tips showing metastasizing unemployment growth.

Today, it occurred to us that we’d seen a graphic like that somewhere before: A CDC map of obesity by county.

The left map is a snapshot of county-level unemployment rates from October 2008; darker counties have higher unemployment (the time-lapse map we grabbed it from goes to October 2009, at which point the whole country is basically black).

At the right is a CDC map released last month of obesity rates in 2007—it’s the first county-level rendering of obesity data.

Researchers at the University of Laval in Quebec, Canada found that too much thinking can make you fat!

The stress of onerous mental tasks such working on the computer can contribute to obesity.

Dr. Angelo Tremblay and his team measured the food intake of students after three tasks - relaxing in a sitting position, reading and summarizing text, and completing a series of memory, attention and vigilance tests on computers.

Despite the low energy cost of mental work, the students consumed 203 more calories after summarizing a test and 253 more calories afterthe computer tests. Read more

Memoirs of A Guinea Pig 000

I am currently revitalizing this blog and was supposed to post something else but a tragedy happened just this early evening. My mild obsessive-compulsive disorder had led me to discover that my only guinea pig, Butch, died.

Butch was a lazy, happy guinea pig and it was devastating that I personally saw him like that. I do not want to cry anymore like when my first guinea pig died so I just laughed it off, pretending there’s nothing wrong even though I was dying inside, remembering that I have dozens of his photos stored in my hard disk which I was planning to post later in his own website.
