bike riding for better health

bike riding for better health

Bicycling is a great way to see the outdoors, take in the fresh air, or simply get around town. It’s also an efficient way to burn excess calories, shed body fat and improve cardiovascular health. Depending on your body weight and the intensity of your ride, you will probably burn some where between 400 and 500 calories on a one hour bicycling trip.

If weight loss is your objective, cycling can be very beneficial. A gradual weight loss of approximately one pound a week is a wise goal. Gradual weight loss helps to maintain muscle tissue (remember sitting on the couch burning calories?) and will greatly increase your chance of long term success. People who lose a great deal of weight quickly, often through deprivation-type diets, are very likely to regain the pounds within the first year.

Better Eating = Better Cycling = Better Body

Once you have established a regular cycling routine and are reaping the benefits of feeling stronger and healthier, you may want to make some small dietary changes.

The key to a healthy diet is increasing whole foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other foods that are naturally whole and unprocessed) and knocking out the less healthy portions of your diet. Read more

too fat to work

too fat to work

Last week, we highlighted a scary county-by-county map that a commenter posted to #tips showing metastasizing unemployment growth.

Today, it occurred to us that we’d seen a graphic like that somewhere before: A CDC map of obesity by county.

The left map is a snapshot of county-level unemployment rates from October 2008; darker counties have higher unemployment (the time-lapse map we grabbed it from goes to October 2009, at which point the whole country is basically black).

At the right is a CDC map released last month of obesity rates in 2007—it’s the first county-level rendering of obesity data.

fat guinea pig

I am currently revitalizing this blog and was supposed to post something else but a tragedy happened just this early evening. My mild obsessive-compulsive disorder had led me to discover that my only guinea pig, Butch, died.

Butch was a lazy, happy guinea pig and it was devastating that I personally saw him like that. I do not want to cry anymore like when my first guinea pig died so I just laughed it off, pretending there’s nothing wrong even though I was dying inside, remembering that I have dozens of his photos stored in my hard disk which I was planning to post later in his own website.

Butch,

I am sorry that I sometimes ignored you but I do really love you so much.
